Our California Foley family helped us start out our visit to the coast in style!
On our arrival day - Cousin Diane and Aunt Mary met us at the airport in Santa Barbara. We had a quick driving tour of Santa Barbara on our way to the harbor.
We met Cousin Donny and his girlfriend Kim at the harbor and had a nice walk out the break-water which is like a concrete pier. It was a beautiful place and it ended up being a beautiful day out!
We had lunch at Brophy Brothers right there in the harbor and were seated on the upper level patio. The company was great...food and drink were excellent...it was a wonderful way to start out the day! What a treat from Donny!
Diane led us on a tour through town and out along the mountain range. We were struck immediately by the beauty. Mom said it today, "I never really knew California was this beatiful!" Highlight of this tour was the stop at Cold Springs Tavern along a historical stage coach trail. We lucked out and chanced upon a day that had an amazing outdoor band playing roots rock classics including the drummer who used a cardboard box as his drums.
Eventually, we arrived at counsin Deb's house in Arroyo Grande, right next to Pismo Beach where we were staying. Deb and her husband Chuck had clearly been preparing for us for a while. What a welcome! Table was set, bottles of wine were openned and California style dinner awaited. We received the royal tour of a home full of impressive updates done with the master craftsmanship of her talented husband, some with the help of, no we'reed not kidding, Donny!
Deb and Diane helped us all get to our new residence for a week. After a few trips around the complex, we landed in the right place. Perfect location to shops, beach, pool, etc. The condo unit itself had everything we needed and more! Diane - you rock eternally! The unit is in a secure, gated community, which was helpful considering our realization upon waking up the next day. The key, that had been carefully placed in a lock box for our entry, was inadvertantly left in the front door throughout the night. You can take the girls out of Iowa, but you can't take the Iowa out of the girl.
What are trip is all about!
It has been some year for the Foley Family. Our lives were forever changed on March 16th this year, with the loss of my Dad. I have never experienced such a great and personal loss before, and am not looking forward to another, though unfortunately, time will bring more. We of course loved, respected, appreciated and just downright liked the heck out of my Dad while he was here, but it would have been hard to imagine and understand at the beginning the hole that his being gone would leave behind.
On February 11th of this year, my Mom and Dad celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. We kids wanted to do something special for them. Mom had mentioned more than once wanting to see the ocean – so we decided we were going to send Mom and Dad on a trip somewhere coastal of their choice sometime late this summer as their Anniversary, and other misc. holidays gift this year.
It is very important to us that not only does Mom still get to go, but that we do something special in Dad’s memory and all have something positive to look forward to after this challenging year. If it was feasible – we would have all planned to go on this trip – but with the help of our cousin Diane, we got the ball rolling and planned this trip to California for Mom, myself and my sisters – Julie and Cathy.
